You guys, this book! I was nervous going in, but honestly, it blew me away. My third Ali Hazelwood book this year, 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦, with its intimate, entertaining, and unique premise, might be my favorite. I used a mix of audio and ebook here, and both were excellent. The stylistic editing here is extraordinary: the inner thoughts, the texts, the conversations, the meaningful chapter titles. I think I am swooning over typography.I initially put on the audio for a long drive at chapter 11, “We work it out of our system, and never think about it again” (IYKYK). I could not get over how perfectly Clarke’s (warm and gravelly) and Dalton’s (sharp and aloof) voices matched the characters I had already developed in my head. The duet style was perfect, and I could easily distinguish inner monologue, emotions, and characters!I know other readers had difficulty with the amount of physical intimacy in this book, but I thought the context surrounding it, including the use of consent (throughout the encounters) and the level of trust between them to try something new, was stunning. Yes, they avoided putting their feelings into words, but they certainly were communicating in bed.Additionally, we got a lot of bare vulnerability in their conversations. I loved that Rue and Eli were trying to find a reason they were incapable of raw, intimate love by confessing their most private secrets. The message is that not everyone can open with everyone, which is okay!{slight content spoiler ahead}Ali is incredibly talented. With the profundity of the content covered (college sports, complicated sibling relationships, found family, corporate financials, patents, and the struggle of grad students), there was a possibility it would feel disjointed. Then, the deeper layers of food insecurity, the death of a parent, and trust issues—she covered a lot of depth. Ali nailed it, and it came together wondrously.I already was a massive Ali Hazelwood fan, but after experiencing her incredible stylistic range, and her tenderness towards dark (yet essential topics) she reigns as one of my top authors, hands down.

ABOUT:
When Joy Moore goes missing, Benny Abbot immediately spirals into panic. Joy is his best friend and podcast co-host, and there appears to be a decent strain in their relationship. Benny’s unease is compounded by the fact that Joy’s husband, Xander, is also missing. As the days pass, Benny becomes a subject himself. It is only through Joy’s POV that the truth begins to come to life.
MY THOUGHTS:
This is one heck of a debut. I love that this thriller also had this huge friendship/romance subplot. Genre-bending lovers, this is for you.
The writing is sharp, the pacing near perfect, and the reveals are shocking. Crum easily propels this narrative forward in a way that left me excited every time I picked this book up.
In particular, I enjoyed the feeling of not knowing whom to trust, and Crum did an excellent job of casting doubt in the reader’s mind about what was happening.
The dual timeline- dual POV helped feed my ever present suspense while also giving me enough information to keep me fully engaged!
Plus, the Los Angeles hills vibe was immaculate, which always makes me enjoy a book more!
AUDIO:
If you are an audiobook fan, you need to listen to this book. The production quality is through the roof. Whelan and Hopkins complement each other so well! I wanted this podcast to be real. The snippets we got were so excellent!
SIMILAR BOOKS:
This reminded me of None of This is True, but that might just be because it’s a podcast. This was (thankfully) a little less dark.
