READ VIA: #gifted NetGalley ARC, thank you Cara Calloway I ended up preordering the book before I finished it!ABOUT: Winona “Winnie” Jean finds herself attending a paranormal investigation with her younger brother when he leaves to go help a friend. Suddenly, she is alone in a supposedly haunted penitentiary. When the last person she ever expected to see, Charlie, shows up to photograph storms from one of the towers. As the night evolves, they attempt to unravel the truth behind a former inmate’s conviction, as well as the real reason their relationship fell apart.Ps. He has glasses and a gold chain 😍😍😍MY THOUGHTS: This one was so good! Second chance with dual timelines that add to the character’s connection, a little bit of a mystery surrounding a ghost, and compulsive writing that had me excited to pick up my Kindle! There was forced proximity, friends to lovers to nothing vibes, and second chance! Calloway’s writing is descriptive and well-paced, with complex, fully developed characters. While single POV, I loved that I knew exactly what Charlie was thinking because he communicated! And he WANTED HER!And yes, Winona did run in the past. But the way she antagonizes over that previous choice and has obviously done the work to try to heal herself was so perfectly written. You cannot help but root for her and Charlie from the opening scenes. While a haunting mystery unfolded in the background, I appreciated that it served as a device for Charlie and Winnie to work together, and it also kept me engaged. ABOUT:
When Joy Moore goes missing, Benny Abbot immediately spirals into panic. Joy is his best friend and podcast co-host, and there appears to be a decent strain in their relationship. Benny’s unease is compounded by the fact that Joy’s husband, Xander, is also missing. As the days pass, Benny becomes a subject himself. It is only through Joy’s POV that the truth begins to come to life.
MY THOUGHTS:
This is one heck of a debut. I love that this thriller also had this huge friendship/romance subplot. Genre-bending lovers, this is for you.
The writing is sharp, the pacing near perfect, and the reveals are shocking. Crum easily propels this narrative forward in a way that left me excited every time I picked this book up.
In particular, I enjoyed the feeling of not knowing whom to trust, and Crum did an excellent job of casting doubt in the reader’s mind about what was happening.
The dual timeline- dual POV helped feed my ever present suspense while also giving me enough information to keep me fully engaged!
Plus, the Los Angeles hills vibe was immaculate, which always makes me enjoy a book more!
AUDIO:
If you are an audiobook fan, you need to listen to this book. The production quality is through the roof. Whelan and Hopkins complement each other so well! I wanted this podcast to be real. The snippets we got were so excellent!

This reminded me of None of This is True, but that might just be because it’s a podcast. This was (thankfully) a little less dark.
